New York, the Big Green Apple: the future of energy is in photovoltaics

New York has decided to go green by producing energy from renewable sources. The State of New York estimates that by 2015, 45% of electricity will be generated by renewable sources. The first steps towards a more sustainable city will begin as early as 2010 with the first PV installations.
The first objective will be reached in 2014 with the installation of 100-MW photovoltaic systems (80 MW more than those currently in place).
This project, whose chief goal is to make New York a mainly solar-powered city, is the result of the collaboration between private individuals and the New York Power Authority (NYPA), which will purchase any excess energy to supply municipal concerns and rural electric cooperatives.
Not only is this project eco-friendly, it also benefits New Yorkers by creating 50,000 new jobs.
But New York is not the only area that stands to gain from the project, which extends to the country as a whole: in a report entitled US Utility Solar PV Markets and Strategies 2009-2012, analysts from Emerging Energy Research forecast the installation of 2,000 MW of PV capacity in 2011, 12,000 MW in 2015, and as many as 21,500 MW in 2020.
This is the largest energy intervention in the history of New York State, whose most famous city is truly becoming the Big Green Apple.

  1. We must think about our future. I would love to see the progress of this project.
