Part of the Microbial Home system developed by Philips, which the company describes as a domestic ecosystem that challenges conventional design solutions to energy, cleaning, food preservation, lighting and human waste, the larder consists in an evaporative cooler and vegetable storage system built into the dining room table, designed to keep living food fresh naturally.
In the center of the table is a twin-walled terra cotta evaporated cooler, equipped with a variety of compartments which vary in thickness and volume in order to preserve different foods at the most appropriate temperatures. The outside of the cooler is warmed by hot pipes pre-heated by the methane digester built into the kitchen island.
The table, made of reclaimed wood, is supported by a cast iron frame that also includes water and gas pipes. A ceramic garden and larder is located above the table and make it possible to produce home-grown vegetables and herbs, extending food shelf life naturally and localizing food production.
