Windowfarms, growing fresh produce in your kitchen window

by Samantha on Tuesday, 6th December 2011 in Design

Windowfarms could be the perfect way to grow fresh produce at your own home all year round! This vertical hydroponic system consists of a sleek, streamlined column of pots that you can hang in the window or stand on a metal base. Windowfarms come in one-column and four-column models and include eco-friendly plastic pots, irrigation tubes and a pump that delivers nutrients to the plants based on a timer.

The plants require direct sunlight for successful growth, however, some plants may grow better than others depending on the unique microclimate of each home. Home-gardeners can experiment with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and greens to determine which is best suited for that environment.

Windowfarms Projects, the Brooklyn-based start-up company that produces these systems, plans to begin manufacturing a new model with easy assembly in approximately ten minutes. Although the Windowfarm is far from being able to meet all household produce demands, it is a step in the right direction in terms of knowing where your food comes from.
