The Ecology Pavilion in the Mile End Park in London’s East End is a sustainable events venue, beautifully designed by George Gardner Associates to blend into its natural surroundings. The structure is one of three energy-efficient buildings located in the park, along with an Arts Pavilion and Children’s Centre. A 6.5 KW wind turbine sits on the island in the middle of the adjacent pond, generating the energy necessary to circulate water throughout the wetland.
The one-level pavilion can accommodate up to 220 guests and hosts a wide range of activities, from art exhibitions to seminars, corporate events and wedding receptions. The Mile End Park Rangers also use the facility for environmental education activities, held Monday through Friday as well as during school holidays, in order to increase environmental awareness among children.
The structure was designed to ensure the highest possible level of energy efficiency, which is largely thanks to the presence of a passive annual heat storage system (PAHS). An insulation umbrella made of polystyrene and polythene stretches beyond the building’s floor plan, collecting and storing heat generated by occupants, light, equipment and the sun.
Solar gain provides natural heat, reaching the interior through large double-glazed, argon-filled windows, which also allow natural light to flood the space. Most rooms receive natural light and ventilation thanks to a combination of windows and skylights. Both the light and heat can be regulated thanks to external wooden shutters, made of FSC-certified wood like much of the rest of the building.
