Stone Creek Camp is a rustic yet modern lodge on the eastern shore Flathead Lake in Bigfork, Montana. The property, designed by Andersson Wise Architects, sprawls over 15 acres and included an original cabin dating back to the 1940s, which was preserved and renovated. Though numerous other buildings were added, transforming the fishing camp and lodge into an extensive getaway complex, the buildings blend into their surroundings thanks to the extensive use of on-site materials incorporated into the structure. The complex - which now consists of a main residence, the Lake House; a lodge; a 4-car garage and workshop; a guest house; a large dock; and the original cabin – abounds with green features. Most materials were sourced regionally, reducing transportation emissions, a sod green roof provides insulation and infiltration for the Lake House, and the design guarantees energy-efficiency. A radiant floor heating system heats the rooms, while super-tight, closed-cell foam insulation and high performance windows reduce heat dispersion. In addition, a cold roof system prevents ice dams from forming.
All of the decks and floors were built with durable, rot-resistant IPE wood, and part of the outside of the structure is in naturally-oxidizing Corten steel, which requires very little maintenance. The exterior also features beautiful, stacked-wood façade made of fallen Douglas Firs found on-site is an eloquent example of the home’s harmony with its environment. The various buildings are connected by way of a pebble-and-earth path. There is also a unique concept of indoor/outdoor living at play in the Austin-based studio’s design.
Vast deck space allows visitors and residents to pass much of the day outside, and each bedroom includes protected outdoor sleeping space, making it possible to enjoy the sounds of the wind and wildlife.
