Sustainable, liveable infrastructures. Hassell’s metro stations on a human scale

by Christiane Burklein on Friday, 27th January 2012 in Sustainable Architecture

The expansion project for the metro line in northern Sydney with 4 new stations has earned Hassell the 2011 Chicago Atheneaum International Architecture Award

The project by HASSELL of Australia, a practice which stands out for its interdisciplinary nature, conquers primarily for its attentive focus on the end user’s needs. Taking the metro in one of the four new stations in the new area now served by the Epping to Chatswood line - Epping / Macquarie University / Macquarie Park / North Ryde – is a positive experience right from the start, for the iconic glass entrances let in light and air that reach all the way underground and act as landmarks at night.

This saves on ventilation and lighting costs, in that the contribution made by natural light and air improve real and perceived comfort.

Once underground, we find ourselves in a well-lit, clearly readable place where passengers are guided toward their destinations. The environment infuses a sense of calm with its timeless elegance, appropriate for an infrastructure intended to outlive the fads, making travellers feel at ease.

Signs are also designed to facilitate readability and orientation as much as possible, saving passengers the unpleasant experience of getting on the wrong train.

LED lighting saves energy, and various services such as ticket sales and station management are grouped together.

The acoustics are clear, the temperature comfortable and the air good. Thinking “green” and using public transport becomes a conscious choice which does not involve giving up comfort. What better way of encouraging citizens to leave their cars at home and help cut greenhouse gas emissions, considering that a train produces 5 times less emissions per passenger/km than a car?

In this project HASSELL adds to the already significant number of awards won by its offices in Australia, China, Southeast Asia and England.
